If you look at the kind of images that are printed in guidebooks, and expensive coffee table books, they tend to share similar characteristics. Find photos that you admire and try to analyze why you want to. These are some of the features I like:
Include People
Journals in particular, whenever the people in the shot. There is a human connection to the viewer, a feeling of being there and a sense of scale. Photos on emotion and empathy with someone in the face. Avoid crowds and simplification of signal for one person. The young and old favorite topics, with their innocent expressions and weather worn face, respectively. People make your shots warm, friendly and charming. Just as you are.
Simple, clear layout
a good shot focuses attention on the person by a bright background and a simple but interesting composition. Always remove rubble for the picture – this is a real art.
